Carrier Oils
Carrier oils are also referred to as vegetable oils and base oils. They have extensive applications in Aromatherapy because they are used to dilute Essential Oils for application. They are also used in the manufacturing of cold-process soaps and for massage by Licensed Massage Therapists.
Unlike Essential Oils that do not go rancid, Carrier oils have a shelf life. While some may have excellent anti-oxidant properties such as Camellia Seed or Wheatgerm Oil, they can still expire, particularly in conditions of high heat or with prolonged exposure to open air and light. The Carrier oils themselves are commonly extracted by the cold-press method. In this process the fatty oil portions of the product are extracted and collected. Examples of Carrier Oils extracted using this method are Almond Sweet, Avocado, Passionfruit, Sesame and Sunflower. In instances where there is very little oil like in the case of Grapeseed Carrier Oil, solvent extraction may be used using a food grade solvent; which is then removed at the end of the process.
